  • The Targeted Intervention Project for Migrants was sanctioned by the Delhi State AIDS Control Society, Govt. of NCT of Delhi to cover Ten thousand migrants every year with an objective:
  • To control and reverse HIV/AIDS.
  • To increase the coverage and uptake of services like STI treatment.
  • To ensure 100% condom usage.
  • To improve referral services and develop linkages.
  • To improve access to health services.

There is increasing evidence and growing recognition of the importance of migration/mobility in the spread of HIV infection. Prevalence of HIV amongst Migrants (many of whom are informal workers) is the highest in any group, after the High Risk Groups of FSW, MSM and IDUs.

Delhi is one of the fastest growing cities in India. Its population is around 16753265 as per 2011 census. The density of the population is around 11297 people per sq. km. the total number of migrants to Delhi stood 3723462 out of which 2002615 were males and 1720847 were females. Delhi has been attracting migrants through pull factor from various states of India.

Highest burden of HIV is amongst migrants, after the High Risk Groups (3.6 %) and ten times that of the general population. There is a clear and increasing evidence of HIV and Migration. Migrants are at risk and need specific and focussed programmes that address the linkages.

West Delhi is one of the crucial districts of Delhi and is important for handling the administration of the capital of India. The entire state of Delhi is neatly divided into 9 districts and West Delhi is just one of them. West Delhi is the fourth largest amongst nine districts of the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

According to the 2011 census West Delhi has a population of 2,531,583 roughly equal to the nation of Kuwait or the US state of Nevada. This gives it a ranking of 169th in India (out of a total of 640). The district has a population density of 19,625 inhabitants per square kilometre (50,830 /sq mi) .Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 18.91 %.West Delhi has a sex ratio of 876 females for every 1000 males, and a literacy rate of 87.12 %.

‘Migration’ is the spatial mobility of people from one geographical area (place of origin) to another (place of destination), with the intention of settling temporarily or permanently or semi-permanently. There are a variety of reasons for migration economic (livelihood, economic imbalance, job opportunities etc.), environmental factors (drought), demographic reasons (family migration, movement of young and retired persons) or political reasons (refugee movements etc.). Some of these are factors are related to origin (push factors) and others opportunities in the place of destination (pull factors).

Migration plays an important role in the spread of HIV infection. It is widely recognized as one of the main facilitating conditions of HIV transmission. Over two hundred million people in India are estimated to migrate regularly from rural to urban areas for employment.

HIV prevalence in migrants group is then a manifestation of economic and social inequalities. Being a migrant is not a risk factor in itself, but the process of migration and integration into local communities can expose the migrants to the risk of acquiring infectious diseases.

Ekta Shiksha Sansthan has associated with the Delhi State AIDS Control Society, Govt. of NCT of Delhi under Targeted Intervention Project for Migrants. ESS selected for the project for the area of West Delhi and start working from July 2011 during that period organization conducted need based survey of the area according to that we have plan various activities in view of the target group.
